Panjab Digital Library had digitized a small cache of Manuscripts at Kurukshetra University in 2004. We liaised with the Kurukshetra University Administration to retrieve these and publish them online.

A Few are irretrievably damaged, a few whose Titles remain undeciphered.

Some Manuscript Stats for National Museum, New Delhi

So today was mission National Museum, New Delhi through the rare stroke of good luck in meeting the Retd. Archaeologist Cpt. Thakur who was closely associated with the Museum who very kindly arranged my introduction with the Director.

I had a brief conversation with the Curate Mr. Rehman, a Scholar of Arabic – an RTI to get more details is being filed as well  – I got to know a few things:

Number of Manuscripts in Perseo-Arabic Group: 8718 ( 1205 are actually antique Books )

Number of Manuscripts in Sanskrit and Other Indian Languages: 5425
So Total is: 14143
2618 Manuscripts have been scanned out of which 80% are in Arabic.
Rehman told me that National Museum manuscripts were being cataloged in the following URL with Sample Images for each.
This above is filtered by National Museum holdings only but Other Museums can be similarly queried:
A filter for Sharada fetched 618 Texts.
Another random search for Pratyabhijna fetched:
which has Pratyabhijna Pravimarshini by Lakshman, something to check out.
I also came to know that they have a manual register of there Manuscripts which strangely is marked Confidential. This due to its confidential status is technically out of bounds, remains to be seen if our RTI can get this List which logically belongs to Public Information.
An Excel of certain manuscripts has also been made, I got to get a glimpse and I asked them to search Ishvar, 3 Items showed in that portion of the Excel with Ishvara Pratyabhijna, there would have been more.
A sad fact I learnt was that Govt rates for getting manuscript copies is 1000 Rs/folio !! yes 1000 Rs/folio.
Soon we will meet the Director Mr. Mani – who was very affable on Phone, I will bring these two issues:
Comprehensive Listing should be online ( whatever has been done including that Excel ) and Digital Texts should be at reasonable rates.

Why Government of India Cultural Agencies need to just concentrate on putting all there Heritage Online and not invest in publication, conferences, seminars and other picnic style leisures and resource intensive distractions

This one article says it all:

https://www.princeton.edu/news/2017/08/22/orange-new-green-how-orange-peels-revived-costa-rican-forest

An Orange Juice Company in Costa Rica decided to dump 12000 Tons of there Organic wastes into a barren area and then for reasons, completely forgot about it. Two decades later when they revisited the original site that landmass had become a complete Forest with a vibrant ecosystem that just took one flimsy effort.

Similarly, if GoI Agencies like NMM, IGNCA, National Archives, National Museum, Doordarshan, AIR, Nehru Memorial, NSD, National Film Dev Board and the rest just decide to put all there digital Collections online , global aficionados will assure the Internet of Things Logical Conclusion of that material.

Publishing Books, organizing conferences is like
trying to market yourself using snail-mail in the World of FB and Google,
like walking to work when they have planes and cars
primitive efforts in a World which is hungry for Big Data.

Think Big, think Big Data, Digitize and Dump Online

Awaiting the Great linking of Information, pattern mining, Democratization of Information – the Gift of Vidya to the Multiverse – the flood Gates of Information – the Next Great Cultural Revolution .

Solan Tour to Jyotishmanti Niketan. 2 Editions of Sri Svadhyaya and Other Rare Books

In Solan, I met Trivediji finally – many years since I have been in touch over phone and now a first visit to his residence to dig out old publications of Shri Svadhyaya the Magazine Swami Amrit Vagbhav was very closely associated with.

Trivediji’s Father Hardev Sharma Trivedi was closely associated with Swamijis Career in Solan, HP and he was also the editor of Shri Svadhyaya. Later Shri Svadhyaya became Jyotishmati – completely dedicated to Jyotish and continues to be published by Trivedijis Family including young Rohitashva who surprisingly entered a Field most modern youth are averse to.

Even though I found only 2 Copies of Shri Svadhyaya viewable here:
https://archive.org/details/SriSvadhyayaYear13VE2010SharadaIssueCollectionOfJyotishmatiNiketanSolan

https://archive.org/details/SriSvadhyayaYear10VE2008SharadaIssueCollectionOfJyotishmatiNiketanSolan

and another a retro Evaluation of the  magazine’s past predictions

https://archive.org/details/SriSvadhyayaPredictionsCollectionOfJyotishmatiNiketanSolan

many other Interesting and rare Texts also showed up.

Two 19th Century Texts and One 1933 Work on Indian Astronomy I photographed on the Spot:

Images of Select Texts and Shelves can be seen below:

https://www.facebook.com/1537616383159118/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1938318663088886

Noteworthy were

the Illustrated Lahore Hindi Mahabharat in Several Volumes:

A Stack full of Chandi Magazines

Trivedi Family has most generously invited me to send a team there for Digitizing all Rare Books – I do feel motivated and in future I will definitely go for it.

The one thing that I missed was a survey of the Local Library which had received a huge portion of  Baghat Maharaja’s (Swamiji’s Patron) Collection – as it was closed due to Guru-Purab.

Punjab Tour 3, VVRI Hoshiarpur

As already mentioned in Punjab Tour 1, most of VVRI, Hoshiarpur’s Texts are now at DAV College. – photocopies of these transferred texts are still available though.

The Sadhu Ashram Campus is actually hosting 2 Institutions one is a College part of Punjab University and the Other is the Publication Wing and may be research also.

Some Snaps I took from there Manuscript Collection and Book Library:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/eGangotrigranthanaam/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1938317783088974

Noteworthy was this Text Samucchaya Sara which seems to be written by Kalhana Son of Vilhan – is this the Same Kalhana the famous Author of Raja Tarangini – the First Work of History Proper from India.

Illustrations from the same Composite Manuscript  on Veterinary Sciences:

We found this Text R.K. Kaw’s PhD on Pratyabhijna, possibly the First PhD on Kashmir Shaivism:

This a 1794 Text A Narrative of the Operations of Captain Little’s Detachment And of the Mahratta Army Commanded by Purseram Bhow …

The Single most important takeaway from Hoshiarpur was the fact that all Manuscrips have been digitized. We are planning to approach management to allow us to put them online for them. I hope the Universe will assist us in this.

Punjab Tour 2. Punjab University Manuscript Library

Thanks to Shankarji Jha again, to recommend us to Shri Mrityunjaya Kumar, the young and daring Librarian of Punjab University, Chandigarh’s Manuscript Librarian who regaled us with his fierce battle with Institutions trying to rob the Collection of some of its Prized Manuscripts.

Shri Mrityunjaya Kumar was very liberal in giving us a tour of his Collection. We thank him for his kindness and generosity

One Manuscript that we photographed picked at random Tattva Bodha:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/eGangotrigranthanaam/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1938317529755666

Some Random Images including the Catalog:

Due to Limited Time, we were not able to find any Sharada Texts even though we did search and the Curate believed there were Sharada Texts in the Repository.

Punjab Tour – 1. DAV College Chandigarh

DAV College, Chandigarh was not in my itinerary of Places to Visit in my Punjab Tour, and I was not even aware they had any significant Manuscript Collection.

Prof. Angiras, Chairman of VVRI, Hoshiarpur, who I was inquiring about there famous Collection that was retrieved with much danger, told me that majority of there Collection of Manuscripts has already been transferred to DAV College, Chandigarh.

The Lal Chand Indological Research Center is a very well maintained Library and there Complete Catalog is now uploaded here:

https://archive.org/details/LalChandResearchIndologicalResearchCenterManuscriptCatalogDAVCollegeChandigarh_201711
originally at DAV College Site:
https://davchd.ac.in/Downloads/manuscripts.pdf

The Rare Books Catalog is uploaded here:
https://archive.org/details/LalChandResearchIndologicalResearchCenterRareBookCatalogDAVCollegeChandigarh

originally at https://davchd.ac.in/Downloads/CatalogueOldRareBooks.pdf

According to this India Today Article, they have 8,360 ancient manuscripts and 9,000 rare books.
http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/lal-chand-research-library-chandigarh/1/190247.html

In the display Boxes, I was able to spot two Sharada Manuscripts, one was Yakshini Kalpa and the other was a very beautifully scribed Bhagavat Gita which had – on that page atleast- numerous scribblings over individual words. The Library Management unfortunately didnot let me take pictures of anything.

The 2 amazing Pieces of News I came to know were that all manuscripts Palm Leaf , Paper etc had been digitized in 2004 but unfortunately not open-accessed.

Lohia Foundation however is re-digitizing all Laminated(!,hurts) Paper manuscripts  in there First Phase running into 6 Lakh Folios – with 3 Lakhs already done. All Digitizations by Lohia Foundation are being done in 600 DPI and they have 2 Book Eye Scanners Flat Bed and Overhead respectively which cost around 25 Lakh Rs each. Each generated Image is around 100 MB with a Output of 900 Folios/Day/per Operator.

All Digitizations are available at:
http://dav.splrarebooks.com

Some Manuscripts have been transliterated and translated into English as well at the Lohia Foundation Site.

Lohia Foundations other digitizations are also viewable at :

http://www.splrarebooks.com
which includes a Persian Mahabharata and many many stunning aesthetic images.

The Other Good News is while examining the Catalog of Lalchand Research Library I spotted the following 2 Entries on Page 252:

KashmirianManuscripts5857, Ishwar Pratyabhijna Sutra Bhashya,Abhinavagupta , 324 , Malayalam , Palm Leaf

3830, Mahartha Manjari, Maheshvarananda, 167, Malayalam, Palm Leaf

The Principal – thanks to Prof Shankar ji Jha who had already recommended us and our Work and highly cos of the warm reception – assured us that if we go through the paper-work for permissions, he will get us these manuscripts. Our application is underway through our Member/Punjab Coordinator Shri Vinod Razdan Sahib and this page will be updated with the Texts as soon as we receive them.

Having found most of his oeuvre including his PhD but some Items still missing such as a hearsay that he wrote a commentary on Paramarths Sara which was actually validated in the Other Paramartha Sara published by RSktS Jammu Campus where in the preface the transalator has mentioned consulting BN Pandit’s translation.

This particular text that I first came to know through the Wiki Page on Shri BN Pandit and was published by JK Cultural Academy, I tried to inquire in the Jammu Office with no avail. Later when I personally visited the Srinagar Headquarters I was told that most of there publications had been destroyed by the floods and there display of the remaining items didnt include this one.

Total 74 Texts were in Urdu with a preponderance of Old Lahore Publications
